AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MANX LANGUAGE
PRONUNCIATION
In Manx the way a word is spelt does not always give you a very good idea of how that word is said. In the index which follows, the spelling of each word is given first of all, then its pronunciation in italics, and finally its meaning in English.
Read the pronunciation in italics as if you were reading English words. If in addition you already have a Manx accent or can imitate one, your pronunciation should be good. Because some Manx sounds are difficult to give a spelling to (maybe you do not hear them in English as a rule), they have to be written in a special way. Here is a list of them:
ae - say “pen", but very slowly, and the e will sound rather like the e in “there". This drawn out e is shown in the list as ae.
aee - somewhere in between the a of “lane" and the i of “line".
aeoo - this is the e in “let" followed by the o of “too". Kaeoo is like the way someone from the West Country might say “cow".
ow - like standard English "cow".
dh -  like th in “this", "rather" or "smooth".
gh - a drawn out g sound, as when gargling.
hw - like the way a Scot, speaking carefully, might say “which" (hwich).
kh - like ch in the Scottish word “loch".
rr - a gently trilled r; it should not disappear like the r in “tear".
zh - like the s in “leisure" or "television".
